Windstream shakes up rural telecom carriers

Posted on November 20, 2009 5:30 PM
In the landscape of telecommunications, Windstream Corp.'s purchase of business services provider NuVox Inc. earlier in November may have an influence that is larger than its $643 million price tag.

The deal represents a shift in rural telecommunications, an industry in which competitors often looked within their own ranks for acquisitions. The move follows Comcast Corp.'s purchase of a Chicago phone company targeting business users in October, and may indicate more aggressive jockeying between telecoms and cable providers for small and medium-sized employers.
