Drinks With The Deal: Hunton's Danon Talks Firm Culture, Associate Goals

Published: February 27th, 2025
Sam Danon, the managing partner at Hunton Andrews Kurth, talks about the importance of firm culture, what associates want out of a law firm and how building his litigation practice helped him establish credibility as a manager.

Today’s young lawyers are “looking for the same type of professional satisfaction as I was when I was coming out of law school,” Samuel Danon said on this week’s Drinks With The Deal podcast. “You want to be challenged intellectually, you want to be working on interesting matters, and you want to be at a firm where you can say you’re getting the opportunities to develop into a lawyer at the top of their game.”

As a litigator at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, where Danon has been the managing partner since 2023, “I always worked hard to get [associates] depositions, to get them into court, to make sure that their contributions to the practice were recognized and that they understood that they weren’t just here to bill hours, they were here to contribute.”

Danon also discussed building his litigation practice while he became increasingly involved in management at Hunton. “Maintaining and building a practice is the key way of earning your partners’ respect in a law firm,” said Danon, who ran his firm’s commercial litigation group and then its broader litigation practice and has served on Hunton’s executive committee since 2012. “It adds credibility to what you ask of your partners.”
